The Human Rights Campaign has just released the highlights of its third annual ìEquality from State to Stateî report that examines 2006 state legislation affecting the GLBT community.

From New York to Florida to California to Washington State, ìEquality from State to Stateî outlines the legislative gains and challenges GLBT Americans face in their state capitols. Some of the highlights of the report include:

  • The first ever defeat of an anti-gay state constitutional amendment.
  • The defeat of first-ever state proactive domestic partnership ballot initiative.
  • State legislatures defeated more anti-gay constitutional amendments than they passed.
  • Eight additional states passing anti-gay constitutional amendments.
  • Additional rights for same-sex couples in New York, Rhode Island, California, Maine, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.
  • Southern legislatures accounted for half of the unfavorable bills passed in 2006.
  • Democratic-controlled legislatures introduced more unfavorable legislation than Republican-controlled legislatures.
