Brent Hartinger, author of the popular young adult novel The Geography Club, will release his latest book next year. Titled Split Screen: Attack of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies and Bride of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies, it’s not only the second sequel to the Geography Club, but is also two stories in one. (Teens read one story, then turn the book over for the next one.) Each of the stories in the two-story volume have an impact on each other.

As for the plots, “it takes place the autumn after the events in The Order of the Poison Oak,” explains Hartinger, in the press release, “when Russel, Min and Gunnar get jobs working as extras on a horror film being filmed in their area.” But they learn that love is far more frightening than any scary movie. Attack of the Soul-Sucking Zombies focuses on Russel’s having to choose between a faraway boyfriend and another who is much closer. Bride of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies is about Min’s coming to grips with a girlfriend’s choice to remain closeted.

“Truthfully,” Hartinger says in the release, “I never imagined that I would write a book from Min’s POV until I had the actual idea for these new books. I always assumed I’d write a book from Kevin’s POV (and I still might, but not for a while). But Min has a very passionate fan base. I think it’s because there are so few characters like her in gay teen lit: bisexual and Asian. And because she’s a person of such clear principles, I think that speaks to a lot of readers too. Many, many people have written to me and said, ‘I want to know Min’s story!' So I told it—or at least one part of it.”

Hartinger also says that there is a movie version of Geography Club, and even some stage productions of it “in the works.” In addition, he adds that he plans to write even more books in the series. “I love writing these books, and I’ll keep doing it as long as people want to keep reading them,” he says.

Split Screen will be released in Februrary 2007 by HarperTeen, and will retail for $16.99. It is recommended for ages 14 and up. Brent Hartinger can be found online at www.brenthartinger.com.
